Benign lesion and excision biopsy

Benign lesion and excision biopsy

I have a palpable lump in the axillary tail region of the right breast. It becomes sensitive a few days before the period. Mammogram and US reports say that this is ill defined and most likely represents fibroglandular tissue and not a mass. The FNA biopsy results were negative. But my surgent has still suggested the excision biopsy - the surgical removal of the whole lesion.
I'm very concerned ... wondering if some other exams (like MRA or core biopsy) might be helpful in diagnosis.

Dear belochka39:  Without review of the films and examination, we cannot speculate on what this might be.  However, removing the lump is probably the only way to know for certain whether this is benign or malignant.  Any tissue sample, provides a reading of that sample only (in other words, what fits into the needle).  If there is concern that this may not be representative of the entire lump, then the only way to be certain that there is no cancer is to remove the entire lump for analysis.  Another option is to get a second surgical opinion.

Thank you very much for responding. That's basically what my surgent told. He is concerned with the assymetry of the breast tissue. If it's a normal fibroglandular tissue on a right breast, it should be on a left too....
Which method of removal would you recomend: Large core breast biopsy (also called ABBI) or open surgical? I want it be more invasive, but ABBI is not widely embraced in the medical community for some reason.

How long was your mass observed before it was decided to go ahead with excision?

I noticed the lump about an year ago, but went to a doctor in November (gyn). She wasn't very concerned, but suggested to do the ultra sound if I want. It was done in March and didn't show any clear results... The radiologist sent me to Mammogram to complete the imaging exam. Mammogram was BIRAD 3 ("area most likely represents the fibroglandular tissus")and the radiologist suggested to repeat the exams in 6 months. But based on that report, my primary care doctor directed me to the surgeon. That visit ended up with NFA byopsy and suggested escision... So basically, i was not observed for any period of time.
