I am 48 years old and go every yr. for my mamogram (mammogram). Just recently I was called back for add'l films. The Dr. read them and suggested I go see a breast surgeon for a biopsy and wrote down undeterminable bi-rad 4. She told me that she had gotten a second drs. opinion before talking with me. Is this rating just an opinion? Is this just something that's written down to protect them in case it should be something. I'm only concerned because when I called the surgeon after they rec'd my written report they told me I had to be seen in the next 2 weeks and could not suggest a particular doctor that I couldn't wait. Maybe it's me but they're scaring the hell out of me with the way things are being said. And I have a copy of my report which is just calcification some round in origin others are granular and varying slightly in size upper quadrant of right breast. I have an appointment next with for the surgeon to see the films. Just wondering if I'm taking this too lightly? I found this web-site when I was researching to see what bi-rad 4 meant, and I thought I would ask womanWomen's way going thru the same situations. Would appreciate anyone else's input. Thank you.
I have just gone through this very same thing. I am 43 years old and was called back for a diagnostic mamo which reported two areas of clustered microcalcifications that were rated a 4B suspicious. I too was very scared after told that I should see a surgeon to schedule a biopsy. I took it very serious and met with a surgeon as quickly as possible and just had my biopsy last Wed and received the results just this Monday which all turned out to be ok. What I learned from this whole ordeal over the last 4 weeks is how this really throws you in a tail spin emotionally but just hang in there, meet with your surgeon and follow his/her advice. Don't forget to lean on your familyBirth control and family planning Choosing a primary care provider Ewing’s sarcoma Family troubles - resources and friends and most importantly the power of prayer. The internet can scare the you know what out of you so just hang in there!!
Thank you for your advice. I believe everything will be fine. It's just the waiting that's unnerving. Glad to hear your results were good. I see the surgeon next Tues. to read my films. It's just the urgency that keeps being told to me, that's scary. Thanks again, take care.
The waiting was the hardest part for sure. When this started for me with the mamo results it was suggested to me that I meet with a surgeon and have the biopsy done within the next 30 days. I too thought why the need for so quick?? I really think that you should feel good that the facility you are dealing with is proactive in encouraging you to followup properly and believe me in order to get your mind back on track you want to get the whole process completed as quickly as possible. Try to stay positive (this was an up & down trick for me) and remember a biopsy is your proactive approach in ensuring all that is well now continues to be well.
