Bi-Rad 4a Mammogram, Bi-Rad 1 MRI

by marydenise, Aug 20, 2007 01:58PM
I had a 2cm IDC lesion removed from my right breast in August, 2006 via lumpectomy. The cancer was removed with clean margins. In August, 2007, I had the standard followup of a digital screening mammogram on both breasts and an MRI on both breasts.

The MRI's result was Bi-RAD 2 on the right, former cancer breast and Bi-RAD 1 on the left breast. Totally normal. However, the mammogram result was Bi-RAD 2 on the right breast but a BI-RAD 4a on the left breast. Suspicious, clustered calcifications for which a stereotactic core biopsy is recommended.

I know MRI's don't pick up calcs, but what does this mean if in fact the biopsy shows some sort of cancer? If the MRI is BI-RAD 1, Normal? I don't understand. If the calcs indicate some sort of cancer, shouldn't something have shown up on the MRI?

Thank you for your help.
