Biopsy Report Question

Biopsy Report Question

My Mom had a double mastectomy at 32. I had a needle biopsy for a lump some time back and it was a fibroadenoma. Recently, I had another "R-4 Suspicious" irregular shaped lump that they found on ultrasound. I had a core biopsy but the only info they listed on the pathology report was "Fibroadenoma No Atypia". It said that microscopic exam was done but no mention of how many slides etc. The tissue taken out was 1.8 x.7x.3cm. It seems like that would be big enough that they would do multiple slides. This lump was not seen on the mammogram and they are concerned I could have multiple abnormalities that can't be seen on Mammo because of fibrocystic dense breasts so I had an MRI done a couple of days ago (results not back). After reading some on the web, I am wondering if they did a thorough exam of the tissue that was removed. On ultrasound it did not have smooth borders like a fibroadenoma so they were fairly certain that it was cancer before biopsy. What should a biopsy report look like? Is it possible that they just looked at a tiny portion of the sample that happened to be "benign" tissue? The biopsy was larger than the lump - they took out an additional margin.

Dear kgoodfl,  When evaluating a suspicious area for possible malignancy all of the pieces of information are needed to be put into context.  A core biopsy is taking a sample of a suspicious area and the sample is evaluated microscopically.  If the information from all the evaluations isn

I had a friend with a lump they thought was cancerous, but pathology initially came back as benign. Because the surgeon really felt it was malignant he had them look at it again and the second report came back as malignant. With your family history I would insist on a second reading or send it to another lab. On the other hand, I've also heard that fibroadenomas can look like cancer on ultrasounds and be benign. Hopefully it really is a fibroadenoma. I wish you the best.
