Biopsy suggested for complex breast cyst

Biopsy suggested for complex breast cyst

My radiologist suggested I have a biopsy under ultrasound for an 8mm supposed "complex cyst" he observed via ultrasound.  He told me that he thinks it's cystic disease, but that there was this small area within the cyst that he wasn't quite able to make out clearly and due to my strong family history (mother had BC) that he wanted me to have the tissue sampled & tested by pathology.  He said the cyst had several smaller cysts within it (septations I suppose).  He didn't seem overly concerned as he was talking to me, but ofcourse I am due to the fact that he ordered a biopsy for me.  I don't think he would have done that had he NOT been concerned somewhat.  I am wondering if he was being honest with me in his explanation that he thinks it's just fibrocystic disease and not something more to be concerned about like a malignancy.  I guess he's wanting to be absolutely sure by doing the biopsy.

I had a mammogram earlier this month & it didn't show the 8mm cyst on the left breast.  I then had an MRI the middle of June (due to family history) and that's how the complex cyst was picked up/noticed.  I then had an ultrasound done of the cyst/area on Friday to get further clarity about it (Dr. requested I get the ultrasound).  Now, the radiologist couldn't say with certainty that the cyst was benign...I have to have a biopsy under ultrasound guidance next week.

Has anyone else experienced this--a biopsy of complex cyst?  If so, how was it for you & did it yield benign results?

I'm very worried, as you can imagine.  I'm 41 now, my mother was 38 when she was diagnosed w/ BC.  The radiologist didn't seem all that concerned about the cyst to me, but just wanted to sample the tissue from the cyst to be sure.  I am going by the radiology office tomorrow to get the write up from the ultrasound I had done this past Friday--hopefully I can learn something from reading what the radiologist wrote about it in his notes.

I guess I'm looking for something positive in terms of support as to what I can expect.  Any thoughts or comments or suggestions are appreciate.  Thanks so much for those of you who have been there & done that to provide help to others who haven't.  I thank you!!!   :-)

I see no reason for the Radiologist to be anything other than honest with you .... it seems he told you all he knows which was the fact that he doesn't know for sure. No better reason to have a biopsy than something that can't be positively diagnosed.  This recommendation is what is called Good Medical Practice.      Regards ....
