Blood after squeezing nipple before breastfeeding?

I am 39 years old and I had my first baby three weeks ago. The 1x I tried to breastfeed her, I squeezed my right nipple before starting and there was blood coming out one of my ducts. In the following 48 hours, every time I squeezed my right nipple blood came out from the same duct. After that period blood stopped and milk from the right breast got clear as that from my left one. In those days my breasts were very congested, and my obgy said blood may be due to a trauma or a blocked duct.. Now, I wonder if I should look for a specialist to get a more precise diagnostic.

Dear livi:  In a non-lactating woman, nipple discharge requires further investigation when it is spontaneous (occurs without squeezing), is unilateral (only on one side) and is bloody or clear and sticky (like an egg white).  Bloody discharge can occur for several reasons including benign papilloma (a wart-like growth in the duct) and uncommonly, cancer.  In a situation where the breast tissue is engorged, evaluating discharge is less clear.  If you are concerned, you can consider an opinion from a medical breast specialist.
