Bloody discharge and I'm 25 weeks pregnant!

by vsk, Aug 05, 2003 12:00AM
I am 25 weeks pregnant and I'v seen through squeezing my nipple only, a bloody discharge in the left breast.  I informed my doctor and I'm seeing a surgeon for it.  What could be causing it?  I had a mammogram back in Dec.02, and everything was fine. I was told I have some fatty tissues, and no lumps are detected.

Thanks,
vsk

Dear vsk:  The time that discharge is most concerning is when it is spontaneous.  There are other non-malignant causes of bloody discharge.  However, the best thing to do is see a breast specialist.  This is the person best equipped to make a recommendation.

bloody discharge is not rare in pregnancy: the glandular enlargement sometimes causes it. Typically it's from both sides. In your case, if it's only one breast, and only coming from one duct opening, it might be necessary to consider some sort of biopsy -- by far the most common causes of bloody discharge, under any circumstances, are NOT cancer. But it's on the list of possibilities. It might also be advisable to stop all squeezing, for two reasons. One, the kind of discharge that's of most concern is that which occurs on its own without squeezing; and two, it will help the surgeon to evaluate if you haven't squeezed anything out before seeing him/her.
