Bone/CT Scans

Bone/CT Scans

I was. diag. stage III in July 2002 and on a couple of occasions have had a bone and CT (chest/abdomen/pelvis) scan done on the same day (injected with radioisotope for bone scan - then CT scan - then bone scan). Recently a friend had the same procedures but later read where these tests shouldn't be conducted on the same day as the barium from the CT scan could interfere with the results of the bone scan. I drank gastrogafin, not barium, if that would make a difference.  Since being originally diag. as Stage III, and therefore, at high risk for mets, should I be concerned that my bone scans weren't accurate and in the future should these tests be conducted on different days?

Dear ps131,  In general, a bone scan and CT scan (chest/abdomen/pelvis)can be performed on the same day and yield interpretable results, though the recommendations regarding fluid intake can differ between the two
studies.  You should discuss with your physician the adequacy of your particular radiology studies.

the images collected from a bone scan are of an entirely different mode than those of xray. Some xrays can't be done at the same time as barium studies. That's not true for bone scans and CT scans. Were it true, the radiologists wouldn't have done them.
