Bone Scan Findings

In November 2001 I had a negative Mamogram (mammogram) (routine).  On April 4, 2002 I had a Bone Scan for Hip and Back Pain, the results were negative for Bone Abnormalities but showed 'An Area of Concern' (exact words) in my left breast area that should be followed up by Mamogram (mammogram).  I had my follow up Mamogram (mammogram) last Wednesday, results negative.  What should I do now?  I'm very concerned about this, should I be?

Dear Soo, The bone scan procedure is used to pick up abnormal areas in the bones, this is where it's usefulness as a diagnostic tool is most helpful.  In the bone scan literature there is mention of detection of soft tissue calcification, which may have been the area of concern noted, however, interpretation of the finding is impossible with this test.  Having the standard evaluation methods for the breast, history and physical exam, mammogram which you have had done, should be sufficient.
