Breast Cancer

I have a question....I have taken a mamogram test a couple of days ago. I have come to this decision since about an year ago a lump on my breast has appeared, yet not pain was present so I paid little attention. About a week ago, the area with the lump on my breast started hurting. I went to take a mammogram test and the nurse there said that I HAVE to go to a doctor to cut my breast off since there is breast cancer. I always knew that symptoms of breast cancer are lumps under arm or on the colon, red breast, warmth, pains, etc. Is this true, that a mammogram test can give the verdict that my breast has to be cut off? Is it recommended that I continue test on this matter?

Hi,
You are most welcome. Do discuss all your doubts with the doctor you are consulting. And also ask for a copy of all the reports - all the investigations that you have got done for your own reference and also so that they are available readily in case you plan to discuss any of them with your physician.
Also, it would be ebst to discuss everything with your doctor or physician that is with a board certified physician and not depend on the technicians and nurses for their take on the matter. Goodluck.

Thank you very much for your response. Yes she did use those words and that is why I resulted to asking someone on the interned, because she really scared me. I did not believe it myself, she said I have to do the breast cut part in lest than 10 days so that it will not be late (no word of lie); so, since I am 72 year old I taught nurses can be trusted. I got really scared about that. Now I made another appointment to another doctor, but thank you very much for the advice, I will be sure to keep it as a "shield" and  if my next appointment is something like the previous one I will trow this information at her. Again thank you and God Bless!

Hi,
Relax, you need not worry. The nuse was quite quick to jump to a conclusion and rudely so, without a physician's approval or even without a mammogram. Remember that it is impossible to diagnose a lesion on clinical examination as breast cancer. Even after a mammogram the diagnosis needs to be confirmed for sure with a USG and biopsy. Only then can the diagnosis be established with certainty and further treatment planned accordingly. The verdict of a mastectomy is very premature and baseless at this stage. Consult your physician as what needs to be done next. Goodluck.

What a nurse, she needs to learn about a bed side manner!!

First and foremost, a Mammogram will show up abnormalities in the breast tissue but further investigation is required to confirm if the lump is cancerous or not.  The normal protocol is Mammogram, followed by Ultrasound and Biopsy if required.  As for cutting off your breast, I do hope she did not use those words, how insensitive.  If the lump turns out to be cancerous, and here's hoping it is not, then you may only need a lumpectomy i.e. removeable of the lump and some surround tissue.  A masectomy is not always required, I know I did not need one.

Most cancerous lumps are painless and you may not necessarily have anything under arm and I have no idea where the colon thing comes into play.  Inflammatory breast cancer which is very rare is the breast cancer where your breast can be warm, painful and red, but most breast cancers are not.

Ok the next step.  Get your Mammogram results and ask to be referred for an ultrasound.  Then based on what they find, request a biopsy of the suspicious area of your breast.  You may have to wait between 3 to 4 days to get the result of the biopsy but at least then you will know for definite.
