Please would a doctor advise me on the following....I was born with one inverted nipple which has, through years of maniplulation, become protruding and more 'normal'. However, the issue is that my nipples are not sensitive at all. They do become erect when very cold but otherwise they don't really get hard when I am aroused. This has caused a problem with previous partners who determine if I am aroused by checking if my nipples are hard. Please can you advise why my nipples don't get hard, even though I am aroused.
PS. I was glad to read that other 'normal' women have breast discharge as I have this from both nipples for a few years (started around forty), even though I have never had children.

Dear pattsy:

Many women have some type of nipple discharge or fluid when their breasts are squeezed, and its normal. Squeezing the nipple sends message to the brain and the pituitary gland responds by increasing prolactin levels, which in turn produces discharge from the nipple.  The discharge can come in a variety of colors - gray, green and brown as well as white.  Some women are more prone to more discharge including women on; birth control pills, certain blood pressure medications or on major tranquilizers.  These medications increase prolactin levels in the body.   There is also certain life periods when a person is more likely to get discharge than others: there may be more discharge at puberty and at menopause than the years in-between. The time to worry about nipple discharge is when it’s spontaneous (comes out by itself without squeezing), keeps on happening, and is only on one side.  If it is clear and sticky, like an egg white, or bloody.

Without benefit of physical examination it is difficult to evaluate the situation fully.  Our recommendation is to bring this occurrence to the attention of your doctor so they can assess and advise you.
