Breast Implants and one nodule in each breast on digital mammogram

I had a digital mammogram in January and was told that I have a breast nodule in each breast.  I am scheduled to have a diagnostic ultrasound on Wednesday.  I also have breast implants.  I am 45 and have had annual mammograms since 40.  Naturally, I am quite concerned and a lot worried.  I can't feel either of the nodules and I have no pain.  Just the diagnosis on mammogram.  The implants have been in for about 12 years and are saline implants.  Are nodules common with implants.  Is there anything else I should do?

Dear DanielleH:  Nodules are no more common with implants than without.  The only potential difficulty with implants is sometimes a technical one in terms of mammography and getting good and complete images.  Often when a mammogram shows an abnormality, spot compression is done and the abnormality may smooth out (it could just be tissue folded over on itself).  With implants, they may want to do ultrasound if they are concerned about spot compression.  You may want to ask your doctor about this.  Unfortunately, there is nothing to do right now but wait for the next test and results.
