Breast Lump.

I found a breast lump which was painful and free moving 5 weeks ago and 3 days before my period.  When my period ended the lump went away and has now returned and is more painful and my period is also due.  Should I be concerned which of course I am.?

Dear LALA:  More than likely, you have developed a cyst.  Actually, cystic breast disease is fairly common and does worsen with the menstrual cycle.  Avoiding certain beverages and foods that contain caffeine (such as coffee, tea, dark colas, mountain dew, and chocolate) may help.  It may also comfort you to know that most breast cancers are not painful.  You might mention this to your doctor and he/she can reassure you with a clinical breast exam.  You should also continue to perform breast self-exam AFTER your menstrual cycle so that you stay familiar with how your breasts feel at the same time every month.  This will help you to detect abnormalities.
