Breast Lumps ok?

by Anna476, Oct 09, 2008 11:58PM
I have four breast lumps.  I found two and my doctor found two.  I've had a mammo and ultrasound and am told they came back clear and I have no reason to worry.  I have breast cancer in my family.  Should I request biopsy or can I trust the mammo and ultrasound?

Hi.

Breast lumps have different causes, and the most common cause of which are fibrocystic disease or fibroadenoma which represents an unusual response of the breast tissues to the hormonal changes in the body.  It is possible that your lumps are actually fibrocystic changes.

I would suggest that you ask your radiologist about the BIRADS score of your mammogram (http://biradsclass.blogspot.com) which is a standardized reporting scheme that will give us the idea whether to pursue further tests such as a biopsy.

Nevertheless, I believe your breasts would warrant more frequent examinations by your doctor and imaging studies such as the mammogram.

Regards.
