Breast Pain post lumpectomy

by Cross2, Feb 28, 2002 12:00AM
I had a lumpectomy 5 years ago with negative lymph node involement. Just recently had a my yearly mammogram which was negative and a hands on medical by my oncologist. This am when I awoke, I had pain in the affected breast which felt like it was directly under the nipple area. There is no swelling, hardness or discharge from the nipple. This pain comes and goes. Do you think it is necessary to see my physician and have this checked out? I have also noted of late a tightness in my upper arm and a heavy feeling in my arm where they removed some of my lymph nodes. Could this just be the start of "lymphedema"?

Dear cross2:  Pain in the breast can be attributed to many things.  Cancers are usually not painful.  I am not sure what to make of the tightness in your arm.  Lymphedema usually starts lower in the arm and moves up.  If this discomfort continues, you may wish to see your doctor.
