Breast Pain

I've been having pain on my left breast.  My doctor examined me and told me that she felt like small cysts and scheduled an appointment so I could have an ultrasound done.  The results came out negative, I was told that I didn't have anything that everything liked fine.  I would like to know than if what she felt (like cysts) if its normal and if its Ok for me to have pain just on one of my breasts?  Its an on and off pain and not only when I'm on my menstrual period.  Also, I would like to know what its the difference between an ultrasound and a mammogram?

Hi,

What is your age? Is there any relation to the pain and your menstrual cycles?

It is normal to have pain, tenderness and lumps in one or both breats due to hormonal fluctuations. These hormonal fluctuations is seen in case of menstrual cycles, OCP and HRT use.

A mammogram is using Xrays to visualise the breast tissue - it identifies any area of abnormal charecteristics especially calcifications etc.

An ultrasound uses ultrasonic waves to differentiate between a cyst (fluid filled structure) and solid mass lesion.

You could try pain relief medications for a few days and see if it helps.
If the lesions persist, you should get a re-evaluation done by your doctor.

Do let us know about your progress.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

Hi,

OCP - oral contraceptive pills

HRT- hormonal replacement therapy

OTC - over the counter

What did the ultrasound report say?

Well, nipple discharge is common on squeezing the nipples. It is significant and needs further investigation if it is persistent, comes without squeezing the breasts, is bloody, is foul smelling, is associated with skin changes or any underlying lump etc.

Was the nipple discharge sent for examination? Did you talk to your doctor about it?

Try some breast massage, warm compresses and breast exercises for the pain and also take OTC pain relief medications for a few days. Try some local application of analgesic gel. If the symptoms still persist, consult your doctor about it.

Do let us know about how you are doing.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

for painful breast be aware of the amount of caffine that you consume. it is in alot of products like pop tea chocolate. lay off for a week or so and see if that can help.make sure you talk to a doctor if this continues .

Hi,

Regarding the questions you asked me about the pain I've been having on my left breast.  I'm 31 yrs. old and I don't think my pain has something to do with my menstrual cycles.  I don't have the pain every day though lately its more frequently and there's more pain.  What is OCP and HRT?  When I started getting the pain there was a white thing coming out of my nipple and when I had the ultrasound done I asked the nurse about it and she told me that I shouldn't worry unless the white discharge was with blood.  What kind of medications can I use to help me with this pain?
