Breast Reconstruction - newly dx DCIS with past mastectomy 17 years ago

by andi721, Jun 23, 2009 10:22PM
I had tublar ductal breast cancer 17 years ago in 1991 at age 40.  I was just diagnosed on (R) side with DCIS calcifications and ADH.  I have decided to remove the breast b/c of fear of recurrence s/p lumpectomy and radiation and I fear radiation.  My question - I have 2 consults this week with plastic surgeons.  This website and other internet sites have helped me form questions to ask.  It seems like the bloggers on this med help site are frought with huge results from reconstruction i.e. encapsulation, pain, swelling. I am beginning to feel it might not be worth it.  I don't know saline versus silicone.  I have to reconstruct both breasts as I didn't the first go round.  Are the odds good if you are generally healthy of not having so many bad side effects from reconstruction?  I do not want to be out of work more than 4 weeks and it looks like many women on this site have on-going problems that are pretty extreme.  I am worried that I could be in worse shape than just dealing with 2 prosthesis.  Is it worth it?  What is t he % of happy customers typically?  Thank you - Concerned in Pa - I am 57.

You don't have to have your reconstruction immediately you know. Can't really help you with percentages and such. You might post on the Reconstructive Surgery Forum where a Plastic Surgeon answers questions. Also may I recommend the following site where all responders are pt.s and they are more than willing to share their experiences. There is a Recon. Surgery section and I think you might get some good information there.
