Breast Surgury Reduction

Breast Surgury Reduction

My sister has breast cancer at age 41.  I'm next in line to get it. (We have the gene)  I want to be pro active and have breast surgury prior to getting the cancer.  Do you suggest removal of all the breast or then reconstruction or will breast reduction with milk ducts removed be adaquate?  (I am a C cup.)

Dear Sugar Rae:  If you are having prophylactic mastectomy, then leaving any breast tissue leaves some risk.  A true prophylactic mastectomy would remove all breast tissue.  Reconstruction is a matter of personal preference.  If you know you have the gene (through testing), you may still benefit from a breast specialist and or genetic counselor who can discuss risks and benefits as they pertain specifically to you.
