Breast calcifications

I have recently had two separate mammograms done.  Both showed a "suspicious mass" in my right breast.  Twelve years ago I had a breast biopsy on the same breast for the same reason - calcifications.  My OBGYN doctor has referred me to a surgeon.  He also has told me to discontinue taking hormone replacement therapy.  My question to you is, has HRT been shown to cause breast calcifications?

Dear KindHeart:  There is a difference between a suspicious mass and calcifications (either suspicious or benign).  HRT does not cause calcifications.  There is speculation, among some specialists, that HRT may contribute to the development of breast cancer.  However, this has not been proven for the general public and there is not yet data to support whether or not this may apply more often in groups with higher risk.  Hormone replacement therapy is not recommended for women who have had breast cancer as estrogen is known to contribute to the growth of many breast cancers.  In other words, if your "mass" turns out to be benign - you could talk with doctors who might recommend continuing HRT or stopping HRT.  If your "mass" were to be malignant, most, if not all, doctors would recommend you stop the HRT.
