Breast cancer and swollen feet when traveling

by ztt, May 25, 2008 03:48PM
Ever since I had my breast removed I am unable to travel any distance without my feet and ankles swelling to the point I can't wear my shoes. I went to Disneyland on a holiday with my grandchildren and could hardly walk. My feet legs and ankles ballooned up and I got a rash that was red hot and very itchy from under my knees to the tips of my toes. We had driven there so it took 3 days and I was a mess when we arrived. It didn't get any better and I was in so much discomfort for the whole holiday. Now every time I get in the car for more than half and hour I swell up so bad and my feet get so hot and rashy. I am on Tamoxifen. Should I be going to the doctor to see if something else is up??? Thanks Margaret

Hi there.

There are several possibilities to explain what is happening.  First is that your feet may be experiencing an allergic reaction to the shoes or any foot wear causing this swelling and rashes.  Though this may not be a common occurrence, it is worth the possibility is worth looking at.  However, the main condition that needs to be worked up has something to do with your tamoxifen intake.  Tamoxifen can give rise to vascular side effects such as venous thrombosis.  Venous thrombosis impairs the blood return from the lower extremities and can cause this warmth and swelling.  This may likewise be accompanied by visually dilated veins (like varicose veins).  This condition can be diagnosed through a venous doppler study.  I suggest you discuss these thing with your doctor so that this can be worked up properly.

Regards.
