I had a mammogram done about a year and a half ago, They said that they found what looked like a cyst on my right breast. I got an ultrasound done a week later and they found nothing..Then they did another mammogram on a higher tech machine in hospital. still nothing..Six months later I went back for a follow up mammogram still nothing..Does anyone know how they tell the difference between the right breast images and the left breast images..Because I was worried that maybe the original mammogram really showed the cyst on the left breast and that they made a mistake and examined the wrong breast this whole time..I am supposed to scheldule my yearly this month and I am scared.
At the time of the mammogram, a tag is placed with either an L or an R to designate the left or right breast. The L or R actually shows up on the mammogram film. It is unlikely that a mistake was made.
However, if it indeed was a cyst, sometimes cysts resolve themselves and disappear. This probably happens all the time without people even knowing they had a cyst.
I have had many breast cysts over the years. Some large ones were aspirated and immediately disappeared from the ultrasound. Others were on my films one year, but had disappeared on their own by the next mammogram.
Go ahead and schedule your mammogram. I don't think you have anything to worry about with regards to the cyst you had last year.
