Breast discharge

A small amount of milky-clear fluid came from my right nipple when I pushed down on my breast during a self exam. My mother says that she has always been "cysty" since she was a teenager (so have I.)My question is, should I be alarmed by this or is it a normal thing? I'm also having a little pain in my right breast, but I don't know if its from the squeezing or from a cyst in that area or both. I never thought to squeeze my breast(press down hard) during a self exam until my husband told me that his mother had a scare from checking herself this way. She saw some fluid come from her nipple from squeezing during a self exam. When he told me he was worried for his mom, I tried it myself. I have no children, and I'm 31. Please help me to understand if I should be worried. Thank you.

I'm not upset. There are details in every question that pertain to the individual. I have been reading from this forum for a while. I've noticed that other people with my problem have gotten the same blanket answer while the details of the question are ignored. If anyone wanted this kind of generalization, they would read a book and not this forum.

please dont get upset by the comments on this forum. I know exactly what u feel/mean as it seems theres only one answer on quetions related to this topic. i think u/i will only get peace of mind by seing a doctor and getting a proper check(as scary as it may be).

Why does the same answer come up for every question that is similar to mine. My specific questions were not answered. I really thought that I would get an answer specifically for me and my question. Copying and pasteing the same answer over and over and thinking that noone will catch on is rude and impersonal in a situation like this; very cold.

i am surprised that someone else is going thru the same thing as myself. I also have a cloudy water like fluid from my breasts when squeezed tho the right one is mo than the left and have no pain at all( well apart from the squeezing). am not pregnant and never have been and not using any birth control pill am 28yrs. i posted on the womens health forum then thought to check the breast cancer forum only to see yours. If its any consolation am glad someone else knows what am talking about. i think the best thing is to get a proper medical check.

Many women have some type of nipple discharge or fluid when their breasts are squeezed, and it can be normal. Squeezing the nipple sends message to the brain and the pituitary gland responds by increasing prolactin levels, which in turn produces discharge from the nipple. The discharge can come in a variety of colors - gray, green and brown as well as white. Some women are more prone to more discharge including women on birth control pills, certain blood pressure medications or on major tranquilizers. These medications increase prolactin levels in the body. There is also certain life periods when a person is more likely to get discharge than others: there may be more discharge at puberty and at menopause than the years in-between.
