Breast pain, redness, itchs,.... Scared! IBC?

by MLM4, Sep 22, 2003 12:00AM
I'm 25 years old and I've had 2 children. About 2 and a half months ago I noticed a yellow/clear discharge coming from my right breast. This was immediately followed by stabbing pain. I went to see a breast spec. who couldn't find anything on my ultra sound or mammgrams and said that the only thing left to consider was fibrocystic disease. That would have been fine with me. I even did what he suggested. I changed my diet completely and took the recommended pills he suggested. Well, it hasn't worked and now my nipple feels like it is on fire. Whenever someone even brushes up against me it feels like needles. My breast feels warm to the touch. My nipple and breast throb when ever I bend over to pick anything up. I can just forget about not wearing a bra as this makes things so much more painful. I can't even remember the last time I went to bed without one. Now my underarm is hurting as well. My appetite is about gone and I'm losing weight fairly quickly. I'm not sure if this is because I changed my diet but I've lost about 18 lbs in a month and a half. My real concern now is that I'm off to see another set of Dr's. We have moved again (military) and I don't feel that I will be listened to again. I'm really concerned this may be IBC and I was brushed off before because I was young and didn't have a lump. I don't feel right and I need advise on how to talk to these Dr's so I can get results. I usually don't work myself into a frenzy over things and I thought this would pass but it isn't going away. It just keeps reminding me it's there. Please help me!
Thank you,
Michele

Dear Michele,   It will be helpful when you see the new set of doctors to have as much information as you can have about what has been done (reports, get your mammogram films, doctors notes etc.) in the past 2 months, so they don't necessarily need to start from scratch with evaluation (although they might want to repeat a test).  Also, make sure they know what you are concerned about, especially seeing as this has been an ongoing problem.  They should be asking about your symptoms, do a physical examination, and order appropriate testing.  Were the pills that you received antibiotics?  If so this is a piece of information that is important that your new doctors know up front.

No it wasn't wasn't an antibiotic as the doctor did not think at the time that it was an infection. I didn't have the redness or the heat at the time and he assured me that these would be present if I had a breast infection. I had several episodes of this in that breast during breastfeeding 8 months previously and I did tell him that.
The pills were vitamin E and evening primrose.
