my mom has had a breast cancer 13 years back and she had a treament of surgery and chemotherapy and after that taken the tamoxifenTamoxifen Tamoxifen citrate 20 mg for 5 years. Now last year in Oct 2007, she has diagnosed with Bone metastases. For that she has received a two Raditherapy and 6 cycles of Chemotherapy. Now dr has told us to start the Arimidex 1mg once a day but I was reading the side effects on internet and one of the side effect of Arimidex is , it decraese the Bone density and could cause fractureFractures across a growth plate (hipHip joint replacement Hip pain, spine etc). Please advise, in case of Bone Metastases, we should go with Arimidex or not ?Thanks.
Chemotherapy would have to continue to prevent recurrence and spread of the cancer to other bones or other sites.
If your oncologist has advised arimidex then he/she must have done so after reviewing your mother's case in detail.
Also, the bone related side-effects are not seen in all the cases. You should still discuss this in detail with your doctor and clear out any doubts that you have.
Talk to him/her whether bisphosphonates would help in your mother's case.
