CA27.29

Hi, can you please explain what CA27.29 is and what it means.  My mom has had breast cancer for 14 years.  She was on Tamoxifen for 10 years, had uterine cancer, was put on Arimidex about two years ago.  She just had her 3 month check up at the oncologist and last time her markers were at 13 and now they are at 70.  I don't really know what all that means but it doesn't sound very good.  Any information you can give would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Dear coffeehound,  CA27.29 is a nonspecific marker for breast cancer.  The use of CA27.29 to detect breast cancer recurrence at present is controversial. Increased levels could be due to a variety of reasons such as - ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, intestinal or colonic problems, medication; Paxil, hepatitis, tuberculosis, systemic lupus.  So these results need to be put in perspective of what is happening overall with your mother, conclusions can't be drawn from this single test alone.
