Calcification

Calcification

Yesterday I was told that microcalcifications have appeared on my latest mammogram and I am going for magnification test next week. This is the 2nd time in two weeks I have heard the term calcification. Last Thursday I had my gall bladder removed and it was referred to as having calcifications. Do you think there may be any connection?

Dear dobro45, Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits that light up on an x-ray (mammogram of the breast).  These are actually very fine specks of calcium that light up on a mammogram. Sometimes they can be an indication of cancer or precancer. Based on their pattern on the mammogram it gives the radiologist clues as to their cause. For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to benign (non-cancerous) causes (such as normal wear and tear on the tissue), a “cluster” of microcalcifications may increase concern that there may be an underlying tumor.  It is not unusual to be asked to return after a screening mammogram for a closer look at an area to clarify the findings.  They will likely do a spot compression looking at the area with smaller paddles that flatten the area out better and will help clarify.
Calcification in reference to the gall-bladder is a completely different meaning.  They are likely referring to gall-stones in this context.
