Calcifications

by berthag, Feb 07, 2002 12:00AM
I had some breast calcifications 2 years ago and had them removed. Last year I had a mammogram and all was fine. I had my annual mammogram last week and the dr wanted me to go for a spot compression test today.  The technician showed me the xrays that have another new cluster of calcifications.  Are calcifications commonly recurring?

Dear berthag: Calcifications are a normal part of the aging process as calcium leaves the bones goes to other places where it is not needed, such as arteries or breast tissue.  In some situations, they can form around cancerous or precancerous conditions.  If the calcifications are numerous, scattered throughout the breast, or large there tends to be less concern.  However, when calcifications are clustered and small, the concern arises as to whether they are forming around an abnormality.  In these cases, further evaluation is necessary.  Thus, the recommendation for spot compression.
