Can Breast Reduction cause microcalcifications?

Hello,
My wife who is 29 years old had a breast reduction about 3 months ago. She just went in for a checkup with her surgeon and he told her that she had microcalcifications. This scared us both, and i am desperately looking for answers. Can breast reduction surgery cause microcalcifications?. My guess is yes, since this can be described as trauma, but i am not sure. If it can cause them, how often are they cancerous? Your answer is much appreciated...Thanks, concerned husband.

Dear JamesN869, Microcalcifications are small calcium deposits found within the breast tissue.  Microcalcifications in and of themselves are not a condition that would become cancerous however they can be a sign of a problem that may need further investigation based on their appearance on a mammogram.  For instance microcalcifications that are more scattered are probably due to a benign (non-cancerous) cause, a “cluster” of microcalcifications may increase concern that there may be an underlying tumor.  Surgery and the healing process surrounding it may also create some microcalcifications so the mammogram findings would be evaluated in context of this "trauma" to the breast tissue.
