Can Prempro increase risk for breast cancer?

by RITZGAL, Feb 01, 2009 05:59PM
Have been taking Prempro for 14 yrs.  Hot flashes and osteopenia (pre-osteoporosis).  Awaiting biopsy results for microcalcifications around or in ducts.  Can prempro increase risk of BC, in particular, DCIS?

It has been proven that Hormone Replacement Therapy does indeed increase a woman's risk for developing breast cancer. If it is prescribed at all it is at the lowest dose possible and for the shortest time that is absolutely necessary. Most Physicians prefer NOT to prescribe it at all.

Thank you for answering my questions.  I have results of stereotactic biopsy.  No BC found, but does show focal atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH).  Radiologist suggests a surgical biopsy now for a larger tissue sample to rule out BC in nearby tissue.  Is this standard procedure?  Is a repeat mam in 6 mos not enough?

When ADH is found on biopsy it isn't unusual to have a lumpectomy and sometimes even some additional treatment following surgery. I wouldn't be comfortable with only the mammo re-check.
You would be wise to follow the recommendation.  Regards

Thanks again.  I will follow recommendations.    Other treatments include tamoxifan (sp) by any chance?  I guess I'll have to stop Prempro.  This is something I will have to talk to Dr. about.  Tamoxifan cause hot flashes?

Yes, but only if the ER/PR reactive test is positive and that will be determined by the Pathology examination of the tissue. You don't state your age but since you have been on Prempro you must be post-menopausal and different drugs are usually recommended for post-menopausal women. All these drugs have side effects BUT not all side effects are experienced by everyone. I congratulate you for following thru with this .. it is important.   Take care
