Dear Bonassor: There are a number of medications that are active in metastatic breast cancer. Some medications are more commonly used early on in the disease process and some others are used second or third line (when the other drugs don't work anymore). Information on the internet may not be the best source to apply to an individual situation. Carboplatin and Gemzar are very common medications in ovarian cancer but are used in other tumor types as well. The choice depends on factors related to the cancer (including hormone receptor results and Her2neu results) as well as the patient's underlying medical issues, prior treatments and the physician's recommendations. We cannot give you specific recommendations related to your wife's treatment. The options should be discussed with her oncologist or, if you are not comfortable, a formal second opinion should be obtained.
