Chemo CAF cycle

by Rajeshwary, Aug 10, 2007 11:52AM
Hi All,
My mother was detected with Type III B breast cancer 3 weeks back. She had mastectomy done and now we are planning for chemotherapy. We saw two different oncologists and they suggested CAF+ Taxol+Herceptine (she is HER+ve).
However the schedules they suggested were different.
One suggested a 3 week cycle with Herceptine at the end while the second suggested 1 /2 week cycle with Herceptine in the beggining.
We are having difficulty in deciding which way to go.
Can anybody please give some suggestions??

Thanks !

Dear Rajeshwary, There are several differing chemotherapy regimens/schedules that may be used as adjuvant treatment of breast cancer.  Determination of the regimen for the individual patient may vary according to specifics of the situation ie. Stage of cancer, tumor characteristics (Her2 status) etc. as well as the individual’s overall health. In general, it is considered safer to give Herceptin separately from the drug Adriamycin (the "A" in CAF or AC), but there is a suggestion that the results may be better when given simultaneously with the Taxol.   You may want to have another discussion with your mother’s  oncologist to discuss the pros and cons of the 2 regimens in your mother’s specific case.
