Dear Doctor,

I have just been diagnosed as above, am in menopause, 47 years old, fit as a fiddle

Had lumpectomy last week and the margins were clear and all nodes (sentinel plus three auxilliary) clear.

The tumour at 8 o'clock  was 2.6 consisitng of half IDC and half mucinous carcinoma plus insitu. There was a second one was at 6 o;clock and was IDC , and the tumour grade was 3.

Oncologist have suggested chemo (FEC 6 shots) over 18 weeks together with Herceptin, then femara or something else after teh chemo finishes. The RT will start after the chemo sessions and the i will be put Herceptin for a year.

My question is , could I skip the chemo? If I do all that he orders except the chemo, how would the odds change? i.e how would the survival/ recurrence figures be different? If it's less than 5 per cent, I might consider seriously skipping chemo (but not the rest) and pursue some alternative medicine.

I fear for my heart and lungs and worry about the leukemia risks  associated with the chemo side effects.

Thank you for reading my question.

you can go to adjuvanttherapy.com and type in all your info and they will explain all your %s of recurrence related to your specific details of cancer. Your onc should show you this and tell you.
I resisted and resisted chemo and tried everything not to do it after lumpectomy, stage 2, grade 3, no node involvement, hormone+++, but ultimately was convinced that it was better to suffer the chemo than recurrence. went through the same decision making progress w/ tamoxifen.
I found acupuncture and homeopathy work better than anything w side effects but must find QUALIFIED <experienced doctors. My homeopathist is an M.D., and studied pharmacology and biochemistry.
Good LucK !

I'd have the chemo in a heartbeat! You've already got breast cancer and I'd worry more about recurrence than leukemia.

I chose mastectomy, chemo & radiation for myself.
