Chemo or not

Chemo or not

I discovered a lump on my breast 19th August I then had a mammogram, CT scan, ultrasound and needle biopsy. The biopsy was positive, 4.2cm tumour.

I was operated on 12th September, mastectomy + 25 node removal. The operation was a success.

Post operation report, grade 3, 3 x 3 = 9 on the ? scale, 25 node negative, estrogean & progesteron positive.

Should I undergo a course of chemo to be safe. There were 25 professionals on the breast team, not all agreed to chemo. The surgeon has recommended the treatment.

Dear Sophie1:  The decision to chemotherapy depends on several factors all of which boil down to reducing the risk of recurrence.  Some factors that are considered in terms of increasing the risk for recurrence include larger tumor size (greater than 2cm) and positive lymph nodes.  Other factors that are evaluated when considering chemotherapy include age and health of the patient.  The medical oncologist should be able to discuss with you the risk for recurrence (specific to you) and the expected reduction in that risk if you decide to undergo chemotherapy.  You can then discuss whether this is acceptable risk reduction in your case.

Thank you for your advice, I think I will go with the chemo. From a mental point of view I think I will have more peace of mind.
