Chemotherapy after surgery

Chemotherapy after surgery

I am a healthy 51 year old woman with no family history of breast cancer. I was diagnosed with DCIS in the left breast in Oct after a routine mammogram. I had a total mastectomy of the left breast & a prophylactic mastectomy of the right breast on Jan.3. It turned out to be invasive ductal carcinoma, nuclear grade 3. The tumor was 1.2 cm and the lymph nodes were clear. I have an appointment with the oncologist next week. What type of treatment can I expect?

Dear Gavinsmimi:  Depending on the estrogen and progesterone receptors, the recommendations may vary.  Because the tumor is larger than 1 cm, chemotherapy may be recommended.  You should discuss with the oncologist what the benefits/risks would be if this is recommended.  If you are estrogen receptor positive, you will likely be recommended to take tamoxifen.
