Clear Mammogram despite lump

Clear Mammogram despite lump

Hello, I have a history of fibrocystic breasts. I have had a fibroadenoma removed and a cyst aspirated. Had a routine mammogram done on Monday and it was read "normal" Birad 2 and said there was a decrease in fibrocystic change.

Then saw a new gyne for my yearly exam , yesterday and he didn't like the way an area in my right breast felt. I am seeing a specialist on Wednesday. IMO, the area he is questining is nothing "new". It has been noted on my last 3 mammograms. I am a mess with worry and am wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what are the chances of this being cancer with a normal mammogram. I am 50 years old and going thru peri-menopause.

Dear Linda J:  If you have had a long history of lumps and bumps, a breast examination can be difficult.  Your new doctor, who is unfamiliar with how your breasts have felt in the past, may simply want to be sure that what he is feeling is not something to be concerned about.  The general rule of thumb when a lump is felt is that it requires further evaluation.  If your new doctor is concerned, then evaluation may be appropriate.  If this turns out to be the same old lump, he will know how it feels for future examinations.

Thanks for the response. It made me feel less anxious. I saw the breast specialist today. The lumpy area turned out to be a cyst and she aspirated it. It's gone. YIPPEE!
