Complex Breast cyst

by Roc, Jun 17, 2002 12:00AM
I recently had a mammagram and Breast sonogram done.  The results came back and my doctor wants me to meet with a surgeon regarding a complex cyst on my breast.  My mom past away from Breast cancer, is this something I should be alarmed about?  I had a cyst removed when I was 17 years old from the same breast.

Dear Roc, Complex cysts describe a structure that is less well defined than a simple cyst with ultrasound. They may contain thick fluid, or fluid that contains dead cells. An aspiration is usually recommended to make sure the cyst is not solid. Any suspicious appearing fluid would be sent to the laboratory for analysis. In general, cysts are benign. Complex cysts require more evaluation to be sure that they are, in fact, cysts.
