Complex Cyst Aspiration

by Kimbo673, Nov 03, 2009 02:17PM
I am a 47 year old female and went for my annual mammogram a couple of weeks ago. I received a call back from them requesting a diagnostic screening and possibly an ultrasound. Within one week I went for that and was told that I have very dense breast tissues with a lot of cysts in both. The tech saw something at 2:00 on my right breast and said they would just feel better if I had a biopsy on this because of the uncertainty of what they saw. She called it a Hypo-Echoic Shadowing mass. I immediately made an appointment with a breast specialist out of town and took my images to them myself. I just received a call from them and they said "Good news" relax a little. We think it is a complex cyst, but we would like to aspirate and drain it and do an ultra sound core biopsy on this.
My question is: does this sound like good news? I have never been through anything like this and have no history of breast cancer in my family. Just very scary to me. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Dear kimbo673:  A regular cyst is a fluid filled structure that by definition is benign.  These can be aspirated if they are causing discomfort and the cyst will disappear.  A complex or complicated cyst is a cyst that may have some solid components or septations (compartments).  These are most often benign but must be taken in context of the bigger picture.  If there is any concern, then a sample will help to determine the exact nature of the finding.
