Complex breast cysts

About 3 weeks ago i went for a mammogram and ultrasound of my right breast...i just turned 40....they called and said they would like me to see a surgeon for complex cysts...what are they and is it cancerous...i'm extremely scared....is it rare for complex cysts to be cancerous..thanks

Dear col4:  Complex cysts describe a structure that is less well defined than a simple cyst with ultrasound.  They may contain thick fluid, or fluid that contains dead cells.  An aspiration is usually recommended to make sure the cyst is not solid.  Any suspicious appearing fluid would be sent to the laboratory for analysis.  In general, cysts are benign.  Complex cysts require more evaluation to be sure that they are, in fact, cysts.
