Complicated Cyst and Dilation in the ducts

by JKR1, Jun 30, 2009 12:08PM
I received results from a recent ultrasound, with findings of a 4x6 mm "complicated cyst" and ridges of tissue with mild dilation in the ducts.  Radiologist felt that findings were benign, however has stated that i should return in 6 months for confirmation of the diagnosis.  What is a complicated cyst and is dilation in the ducts normal?  My doctor said that it was not abnormal for a woman who was of my age and i am 30 and the chance of it being anything more than fibrocystic changes were minimal.  Should i be content with returning in 6 months with what i have been told or should i seek a second opinion?

Thanks for your help with this!!

Dear JKR1:  A complex or complicated cyst is a cyst that may have some solid components or septations (compartments).  These are most often benign but must be taken in context of the bigger picture - is there reason for concern.  Dilated ducts are generally termed duct ectasia and can result in pain and or nipple discharge.  Most often these resolve on their own but can occassionally require anti-inflammatory medication.  We cannot speculate on whether you should feel comfortable or get a formal second opinion.  In general, if you are not confident, a second opinion would be recommended.
