Continued bleeding at biopsy site

This is the 13th day following stereotatic biopsy for microcalcification cluster.  While the results were benign, I continue to bleed from the biopsy site and there seems to be a hematoma at the site as well.  There is no infection but I'm wondering if a dissapating hematoma might be the cause for continued bleeding.

This discussion is related to Lump after stereotactic biopsy.

That's great the bleeding has finally stopped and there is no evidence of infection! What a relief.

I remember the MDs telling me that I should only take Tylenol if a pain reliever was needed after my needle biopsy, since aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen and Aleve might exacerbate bleeding.

Someone mentioned that after biopsy, take non-aspirin for the pain.   Please check with your Dr.  Good luck.

Thanks so much for all your replies and concerns.  I went to my primary care physician and there was no evidence of infection at the biopsy site.  While there is a steri-strip in place, the bleeding seems to have subsided on day 14.  I need to take aspirin for heart-related problems and that seems to have been the culprit.  Again, thanks for your replies.

Regards,
Rosey

If you haven't seen or at least called about this prolonged bleeding I think you should. Either your Primary Care Physician or whomever did your biopsy. Ice pack and moderate compression as previously suggested is always a good idea but from the time of biopsy. When a hematoma forms it takes considerable time for it to reabsorb. This is really too long to have continued bleeding from a biopsy. I'd check with someone about it ... Regards..

All is well -- there is no pain and the bruises and residual lump are both fading.

In my case, an MD radiologist who is a specialist in performing this type of core needle biopsy did my biopsy. She did a great job, I had only a moment of pain like a bee sting when she put in the local anesthetic (Lidocaine), and it all went smoothly.

My upcoming surgical excisional biopsy will be done by a breast surgeon, who is a general internal medicine MD with an oncology specialty in breast disorders.

It may vary according to the hospital which doctor does which procedure according to their experience and interests. Kind regards...

Hope you are getting better soon.

Who did your biopsy - a radiologist or a surgeon?

Question here, who will be better doing biopsy? A breast radiologist or a breast surgeon? Or just experience related?

Mine bled for 5 days and then slowly stopped, leaving a plum-sized internal lump which, 2 weeks later, has shrunk to the size of a large grape. No matter how careful the radiologist, it is almost impossible not to puncture capillaries on the way into the breast with the biopsy needle. Until the bleeding stopped, ice packs and gentle compression were very helpful.

You should consider checking back with your MD if your bleeding persists. Kind regards...
