Cycst in Breast

After my last mammogram my Dr. informed me that I have a 1cm cyst in my left breast.  That's it--no explanation, no indications, nothing else before she flew out of the room.

Can these cysts be a precursor to more cysts in the future?  Can they become tumors?  Should I be concerned? Should I get a new doctor?

Dear MarleneO:  A cyst is a fluid filled "lump."  These are quite common and, generally, harmless.  They are not removed unless they cause problems (i.e. pain).  Some people are more prone to cysts.  You may never have more than this one or you could develop others.  They do not become tumors.  Caffeine can contribute to the development of cysts, so if you drink a lot of caffeinated beverages, you might consider backing off.  Your choice to get a new doctor is a personal one.  However, you should have a doctor who you feel you can communicate with.
