Cyst or haematoma

Cyst or haematoma

I got two examinations of my breast when I found lump in lower right quadrant of left breast. One of the doctors said that I have a cyst, and other that I have a haematoma. I do karate as sport, and approximately one month before I felt lump I had a punch into left breast. So I would like to know what is the difference, risks for cancer and is surgery necessary? Biopsy is not done yet. And I have another appointment scheduled next week with on which they decide what they will do.

Dear asaska:  If this is a cyst (benign fluid-filled structure) or a hematoma (bruise or blood filled area) both are benign and generally pose no risk for cancer.  The key is to determine what it is.  You could certainly have a hematoma if you were punched and these can take a while (months) to resolve.  A cyst could be determined with an ultrasound.  If there is any question, the doctors may wish to do a biopsy to be sure.
