How old is your mother? Is anyone else going to the doctor with her? Sometime they tell you too much and it is confusing. (and i was 29 when i was diagnosed a year ago). I am surprised that she had a dcis diagnosis and they did NOT do a lymph node biopsy when they removed the lump. They can do a sentinal node biopsy which could be one incision sort of under the arm and up to the breast area. It is not unusual to go back and have a mastectomy. It does ensure that they get almost all the breast tissue. (can't get 100%).
Perhaps you can call the doctor and ask him/her. My mother did that when i was diagnosed. I gave the doctors permission to speak with her and they were more than happy to discuss it with her. I would do that and go from there.
