Delay between biopsy and mastectomy

by Fred1121, Aug 18, 2009 12:11AM
Should mastectomy be delayed until the bruises are healed?

My wife was diagnosed with early stage of breast cancer. During lumpectomy, a total of 6cm mass was taken two weeks ago, of which 1.1cm is malignant. Due to size of tumor, my wife' breast swelled. There are still bruises up to now and the swelling is gone.

Should we insist for mastectomy even if there are still bruises? If we have to wait, what is the acceptable period of delay between biopsy and mastectomy?

Thank you for your assistance.

Dear Fred1121:  A bruise is not necessarily a reason to delay surgery.  However, the surgeon would need to evaluate the individual situation and make a judgement about the best timing for the procedure.
