Delay in obtaining breast biopsy

Delay in obtaining breast biopsy

Six years ago I had breast cancer in my left breast and had a left mastectomy followed by chemo.  Everything seemed to be going well until late June when my mammogram along with follow up mammogram and ultrasound indicated a mass on my right breast.  From what I can gather, the mass was small.  The radiologist suggested that it may just be an enlarged lymph node.  However, with my history, I contacted my surgeon who suggested a surgical biopsy.  It was going to be a month before he could do it based on me getting all the necessary tests done and obtaining a release from my pulmonologist (I have COPD).  Well, I couldn't get an appointment with my pulmonologist until late August, so the biopsy was scheduled to occur on August 29th.  In the meantime, I got a terrible case of bronchitis so my pulmonologist would not release me for the biopsy unless it was delayed delayed by a week to give me time to get rid of the bronchitis.  Understandable.  However, the surgeon's schedule is so booked that he cannot perform the biopsy for another month.  Now that's three months after the mammogram.  With my history of breast cancer, I am terrified by the risk I may be facing due to the delay in getting the biopsy done.  Can anyone tell me how quickly or slowly this type of cancer grows?  Would it be reasonable or justified to repeat the mammogram and/or ultrasound to see if there are any changes?

Hi,
First of all,I am not sure why you think that the small mass detected in your right breast is what you say"This type of cancer" when the radiologist suggested that it could be just a small lymph node which is not abnormal to have in the breast.
It is important to know what is the BI-RADS score assigned to your Mammogram and ultrasound reports. You could call the radiology institution to find out about it.
Often times, lumps found in the breasts, are monitored every 3 to six months to check for any changes and biopsies are not required because the suspicion is not elevated.
You don't say if the radiologist recommended a biopsy or your Surgeon advised you to have the procedure done because of your past history with breast cancer.
I understand your anxiety about the delay to have the biopsy ,but I personally don't think that waiting a little longer would change anything on the findings results.
Of course you can ask to have more tests done during this waiting period, if this will help  ease your mind, but I don't think it's really necessary.
You could also ask your radiologist if he could perform the biopsy sooner.
Wishing you all the best and good luck!
