Dense Breast Tissue

I am 52 and in good health.  My breasts were diagnosed fibrocystic in my 20s - there were lumps and bumps - always, thankfully benign, I had a child at 39 and nursed her for a year, after that my mammograms showed dense breast tissue.  I was called back a few times, and that has happened again, with another mammogram and ultrasound scheduled for next week.  I cannot feel a lump.  As far as I know - breast cancer does not appear on either side of my family.
Needless to say, I am concerned.  I found this website this evening and was glad to read about women's stories.
I am praying for negative results on Monday.

Every time we are called back for a spot compression mammogram,we tend to worry that something might be wrong.Most often it's just the skin that has folded over on itself that causes a shadow,but the radiologist have to make sure and that is why a spot compression mammogram is required.
When a woman has dense breast,the recall is not at all unusual.
The purpose of a spot compression mammogram is to achieve better imaging of a particular region of the breast,especially because dense breast can make Mammographic interpretation more difficult.

Dense breast tissue, per se, is not uncommon, and is natural to some women. For these women the mammogram may not be helpful. Ask them what they mean by "dense breast tissue."
