Developing density on my right breast

by lily1973, Apr 08, 2008 06:38PM
Hello

I had a mammogram and it showed a devloping density deep in the central area with no microcalcifications. The radiologist is recommending additional views. I am 34 yrs old and this was my first mammogram. Is it normal to have density  on the breast. I also had an ultrasound of th r breast and that was normal. I am very confused as to why they would want additional views since the ultrasound was done the same day as the mammogram. Has anyone had this before or any information that would clarify this. Thanks God Bless

This discussion is related to micro calcifications found in both breasts during Mammogram.

Hi,

The breasttissue is dense in females less than 40 years of age. A mammogram cannot be of much help if the breast tissue is dense. Therefore, additional views are taken to visualise thee breast tissue, also to specifically focus on any suspicious appearing region.

A USG is a better diagnostic modality in females with dense breast tissue and usually is successful in picking up lesions missed on mammography.

MRI is another option available which can help identify and diagnose underlying lesions in females with dense breast tissue.

Discuss with your physician what would be a better option for you - a USG or an MRI.

Let us know if you have any other doubts.

Regards.
