Dimpling

by Amy33, Oct 12, 2007 08:16PM
Hi,

I am 33 years old and just recently started self breast exam. I noticed that there a few lumps in both my breasts (which I think could be fibroadenomas) and both are painful around my periods; however, my left breast is painful all month long. Also the left nipple slightly goes in when I lie down or raise my arm, making a dimple around it in the areola. Is this normal. I don't know for how long it has been like this. I have 2 kids and breast fed them both for 1 year each, younger one is 4 years old. Could there be nipple retraction even after you breast feed? I just moved to a new place and the earliest dr appointment I could find is a month away (being a new patient), and this dimple is making me lose my sleep. I have family history of young age breast cancer. Any insight would be deeply appreciated.
Thankyou.

I would have it checked right away.  Is there any discharge from the nipple?  Also, from what I have read dimpling is one of the signs of IBC (Inflamartory Breast Cancer).  Have a mammogram and/or ultrasound.  IBC has specific signs and is another form of breast cancer which many people have never heard of.  Unfortunately, a mammogram cannot detect IBC.Chances are you are fine, but it's always better to have it checked out.  I'm speaking from experience.

Many thanks for replying. I've asked the dr's office to call me if any cancellation, I hope they do. I was wondering if anyone else had this experience before. I have no nipple discharge or any other signs of IBC from literature except for the pain, no rash or anything. There are a few lumps in both my breasts, and my previous gynaec said, she thinks I have fibrocystic breasts. So it is very hard for me to look for any new lumps. The more I look at my areola with my hand raised, I wonder if I am just aging and my areola is getting wrinkled and the nipple is sinking into it. Is that possible? Anyone's aroela wrinkle when you raise your hand?
