Discharge from the nipple

Iwonder if you could give me some information...
About 3 weeks ago I noticed that I have some brown looking discharge from my left breast from around the nipple. this carried on for about a week without no pain, by the second week i noticed blood leaking  and have pain under my arm . I cant explain the pain its very weird feeling..
I went to the doctors who I didnt find very helpful, he gave me antibiotics (ERYTHROMYCIN 250MG TABLETS TAKE 1 4 TIMES A DAY)and said he would fax an urgent message to the breast clinic and sent me for blood test.. I went for my blood test and they rung me because they wanted me to go back for more, this worried me as I wanted to no why I had to go back for more, Is there any ides what you may think they were looking for?I got a letter today for an appointment for the 29th of Sept my friend rung the clinic and explained the situation and have now got it for the 11th Aug and in the letter they have put that I will need a mammograms and special needle test - could you give me a little more info on this !!
I have been on HRT for 9 years am 56 years old

I fill very sick all the time and have lost over a stone in weight but am not sure if this is due to worry - the main thing on my mind is cancer could it be that ?

as my appointment is just under two weeks away should I be pushing more or demanding to get seen by someone from the breast clinic or should I go back to my doctors as am still leaking (without squeezing)and have run out of antibiotics

Many Thanks
J Wright

Dear J Wright:  Nipple discharge that is spontaneous (comes out by itself without squeezing), keeps on happening, is only on one side, and/or is clear and sticky, like an egg white, or bloody requires further investigation.  A breast clinic is the appropriate place for evaluation.  As you are very concerned and continue to have discharge, it is not unreasonable to see if the appointment could be moved sooner.  Once a doctor has had a opportunity to evaluate the breast with mammography and clinical examination, then recommendations for additional testing can be made.
