Estrogen status

Estrogen status

Hello,
I hope this does not sound a really stupid question but if you could advise me please. I recently posted here about an IHC test which appeared to be a false postive as a FISH test was negative. What I was wondering was does the IHC test also confirm er & pr status and if so could this also be an incorrect diagnosis.

Warmest regards, Maggiec

Dear Maggiec, There are basically 2 methods that are being used to test breast tumor for hormone receptors.  The tests are either IHC or ligand-binding assay.  Recently (past 5 years or so) the IHC testing method has been used more frequently so it is possible this was the method used.  Both tests have their advantages and disadvantages.  One of the concerns regarding IHC testing is the lack of a standard number for calling a tumor positive or negative (in one institution a 10% might be a positive, in another institution 15% is positive).  Depending on the % positive estrogen receptors might influence whether having it reviewed makes sense.  For example if the testing came back reading 90% ER positive, chances are pretty good that retesting would still be positive.  If the receptor results are negative the question might be what is the cutoff number being used to determine positive or negative in that institution? and if your result is close it may make sense to review.
